How Can I Find A Good Divorce Lawyer?

I’ve never needed to hire a lawyer before, so I don’t know how to pick the right one. I see many listed in the phone book, and I can find more online, but how do i know who is good and who is not? What kind of criteria should I be looking for?

I have found that I am only a “good” lawyer when I get my clients everything that they want. Which is never. What you think you want from a divorce and what the law says you can have are usually miles apart.. Generally speaking, and thats all we can do without having all of the facts from both sides, the court will give you what you are entitled to have, no more, no less. Before you engage a lawyer, sit down with him or her and ask what they will charge you for your particular circumstance. If you cannot afford it, tell them so and ask if they know of someone who will work to your budget. There, I must be a “good” lawyer because I have given you that sound advise for nothing. Good luck.

If you are looking for a lawyer there are several options available:
a) phone book: yes, you’ll have to scour through hundreds of listings, but at least you’ll find a local, credible attorney/firm
b)online: again there are lots of options, but you have to be discerning
c) If you’re really in a rut, try a lawyer referral service- explain to them what you need, and they’ll set you up with a member lawyer who specializes in the field you require
Irregardless of what you decide, you should try to find a lawyer that provides a free half hour consultation to get a feel for the nature of their work. If you don’t like what you see, you can opt out and look for someone else.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
1. You want a lawyer that is transparent. It’s important that your attorney thoroughly explain the process and keep you up to date on the status of your case. You don’t want to be out of the loop.
2. You want a lawyer that is committed to your cause. The best lawyers may have a very busy schedule, but they’ll make it seem like you are their only client
3. You want a lawyer that can deliver. You want a lawyer that can get the most out of your case. So do your research. Will this lawyer be successful? What is their track record like? This may be tougher to figure out, but ask around- you may learn a thing or two
best regards

The most important qualification in my opinion is experience. All you have to do is call and ask how many similar cases they’ve handled like yours. You can get a quick list of numbers for local lawyers near you at the website below.
